We have all done it!
I have before coming home from Afghan, I smashed Insanity every day in the hope to cut some pounds off to reveal the abs underneath my sunburnt body.
However no matter how hard I tried I couldn’t seem to shift that layer and if you have seen the adverts you fell for the same chit chat that I did.
You must have seen the adverts the ripped models bouncing around some room saying how they have found the next best thing for fat loss.
How to follow this plan and you will fight the belly bulge and you will have the beach body you have dreamt of, but they have found the next new exercise plan to get you there.
If this is true then why are we still over weight and why do we have a massive obesity epidemic?
Let me sift through all the nonsense and sales talk and I’ll give you two of the main parts for losing weight. Which most of us over look!
Calories are #1
Without a doubt this is the most important rule with Fat loss. I don’t care what any one else tells you If you eat too many calories you WILL put weight on.
It doesn’t matter what you do you cannot out train a bad diet, If you are constantly eating too many calories your waistline will expand.
There is no magic shake, Pill or even a tummy wrap what will compensate for your crappy diet and this is why all the FAD diets don’t succeed… you have not addressed your poor eating habits.
So to succeed with your fat loss journey you need to get your eating in check but this doesn’t need to be through a mad restricted diet.
You need a calorie deficit to start losing fat and to lose pound of fat you need a deficit of 3500 calories which equates to 500 calories per day so that being said when it comes to losing fat diet plays a larger role than exercise.
Training hard for 60 minutes you can burn around 600 calories or you could just cut that 500 calories from that extra portion you are eating. I know which one is easier and more sustainable.
It doesn’t matter how hard you train and how many days you hit that gym hard if you are eating too many calories you will not lose weight!

Exercise is important but not how you think
The 2nd part of the fat loss equation what get over looked more so than nutrition is exercise.
We have all seen that person in the gym day in day out pounding that treadmill and 6 months down the line they still look the same!
We all also know the person (maybe it’s you) who decides they need to lose weight and decides to run constantly thinking you are burning fat.
Let’s be honest here exercise is brilliant for you and your body and can be used as an extra fat loss tool but it shouldn’t be the first choice. Most of the time training a lone will not bring on any significant weight loss, but if you do it right it will make you look and feel better.
Instead of training for FAT LOSS why not train for MUSCLE RETENTION
That’s right train the body to hold onto your lean tissue so that while you are losing weight you do not lose it.
Diet reveals your shape but resistance training make your shape better.
Keeping hold of your muscle has many benefits for you and your body
- Muscle burns more calories
- It gives your body shape and curves
- It makes you stronger
- Perform better
- Every day life is easier
- You look better NAKED
- Keeps you motivated
If you follow your fat loss diet and simply add in cardio to burn more calories and neglect resistance training you will be disappointed. You will not look how you wish because you would also have lost muscle mass and simple look the same just as a shrunk down version. If you like doing cardio keep it in just add in resistance training to maximise your results. (Not sure how to do a fat loss program? read here)
These are without a doubt 2 of the main points to get right with your fat loss plan and if you don’t get these right (especially #1) then you will not succeed!
No matter how much cardio, the magic pills you take, the cling film you wrap around your belly you will not achieve the body you want by eating too much food and smashing hours on the treadmill.
